SHEPHERD SCHOOL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

Spotlight on Beethoven and His Time

BEETHOVEN. The very name conjures a heroic image of a giant spanning the classical and romantic eras. He was a revolutionary figure who, despite massive hearing loss, created the monumental masterpieces that still move and inspire us. The chamber music festival theme for this fall is "Spotlight on Beethoven and His Time," and we have programmed works not only by the master himself, but also by his contemporaries such as W.A. Mozart, Franz Schubert, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Ferdinand Ries, and others. So on the one hand we will feature composers who were chronological contemporaries with Beethoven, but when we think about the implications of HIS Time, we really must think about how directly his music speaks to us in the 21st century.

Saturday, November 14, should be quite a day of performances as our marvelous students perform music from 200 years ago that seems fresh to us today. As Beethoven said to someone complaining about the technical difficulties of the string parts in one of his quartets, "You think I write for your lousy fiddles? I write for future generations!" Come and hear how the future generations are responding to these great works. Six concerts will held in Duncan Recital Hall starting at 10:00 a.m. and continuing for the next 12 hours. Admission is free and tickets are not required. It will be quite a celebration!
