REBECCA VALLS has been on the Dance Faculty at the University of Houston for 14 years where she teaches dance history, aesthetics of movement, modern dance technique, and creative movement for the elementary school. At Rice University she is the Director of the Dance Program and Rice Dance Theatre. She is the director and choreographer of Becky Valls and Company, a performing group that performs in elementary schools through Young Audiences of Houston. As a Teaching Artist in the schools through YA, her area of expertise is the integration of mevement into the elementary curriculum. She annually conducts student workshops and Professional Development Workshops for teachers. In October 2004, she presented her Professional Development Workshop model at the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) conference in Michigan.

In Louisiana, Valls served as Company Director for Moving South Dance Company (1981-90). Her choreography was funded by numerous grants from the Louisiana State Arts Council and performed in New Orleans, Houston, Washington D.C., and France.
Since residing in Houston, Valls' choreography has been presented by Chrysalis Dance Company, JCC Dance Month, Diverse Works, Weekend of Texas Contemporary Dance, Urban Indian Beat, University of Houston, Rice University, San Jacinto College, and the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
Recently, Valls has studied 18th century Baroque Dance with internationally acclaimed Baroque dancers Paige Whitley-Bauguess, Thomas Baird, and CAtherine Turocy of New York Baroque Dance Company. She performed Turocy's choreography in the Mercury Baroque production of Rousseau's "Devin de Village" with the NY Baroque Company in Hosuton (May 2004).
Valls holds a Masters' of Fine Arts in Choreography from Sarah Lawrence College in New York where her choreography was selected by the American College Dance Festival for the national concert. |
