PETER LOEWEN earned his Ph.D. in musicology and M.M. in double bass from the University of Southern California, and his B.M. from the University of Manitoba in Canada. His research interests concern the music of the Middle Ages, particularly the history of chant, Latin and vernacular song, religious drama, the Franciscans, music as rhetoric, and the role of music in intellectual history. Loewen has given presentations on these subjects in Canada, the United States, and Europe at conferences for such learned societies as the Canadian University Music Society, the Cantus Planus study group of the International Musicological Society, the International Congress on Medieval Studies, the International Courtly Literature Society, the Medieval Associations of the Pacific and the Midwest, and the Midwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society. His articles appear in Speculum (July 2007), The Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology (2007), Speculum Sermonis: Interdisciplinary Reflections on the Medieval Sermon (2006), and Franciscan Studies (2002). He is now working on a book entitled The Music of the Medieval Franciscans. Before arriving at Rice University in 2006, Dr. Loewen was associate professor of musicology at Eastern Illinois University and also held positions at the California State University at Fullerton and the University of Southern California. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and seminars that cut across style periods in examinations of genre, performance practice, and devices of composition. Peter Loewen also serves on the faculty of the Medieval Studies Program at Rice University.
