Artist Teacher of Piano
Pianist SOHYOUNG PARK, born in Seoul, Korea, received her doctoral degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, master’s degree from the University of Michigan and bachelor’s degree in Seoul National University. Dr. Park also received a Diploma of Merit from Accademia musicale di Chigiana in Siena, Italy, and attended the International Chamber Music School of Trio di Trieste in Italy. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has studied with and has been coached by renowned artists and pedagogues such as Robert Roux, Michele Campanella, Paul Badura-Skoda, Dario De Rosa, Russell Sherman, Menahem Pressler, Eugene Istomin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Lazar Berman, James Tocco, Louis Nagel, and Martin Katz. Dr. Park has performed solo and chamber recitals throughout Europe, United States, and Korea.
Her performances include appearances at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Auditorium del Museo revoltella in Trieste, Amalfi Music Festival in Vietri sul mare, Mozart Museum in Prague, the Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, the Series of the Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas in Lancing, and Gilmore Young Artists Showcase in Kalamazoo. Dr. Park also appeared as a soloist with the Rice Chamber Orchestra at the Stude Concert Hall in Houston, and with Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria. She was the pianist of Sam Houston Piano Trio at Sam Houston State University.
In 1996, she won the Shepherd School Concerto Competition at Rice University. Also, in 1992 she was the Second Prize Winner of the International Young Pianist Competition in Saginaw, Michigan. She has been invited to participate in numerous international competitions such as Concert Artist Guild Competition, William Kapell International Piano Competition, and Missouri Southern International Piano Competition. She joined the faculty at Rice University in 2005. Previously, she had been a faculty member at Sam Houston State University. In addition, she is a highly sought-out teacher for pre-college students at the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at the Shepherd School.
