The goal of COLLEGIUM NOCTUARUM - the "Collegium of Owls" - is to present a historically informed interpretation of Baroque music through research, performance practice, and historical instruments. Formed in 2002 by five students from the Shepherd School of Music, the ensemble size varies to accommodate both the number of interested students and the appropriate requirements of the repertoire.
The music performed by Collegium Noctuarum is chosen from all corners of Baroque repertoire. From obscure Bach works and rarely performed Handel cantatas to works by women composers (including Barbara Strozzi and Jacquet de la Guerre), concerts of the Collegium are well-balanced and often shed new light on unjustly neglected music.
Participation marks the first exposure to period instruments for many members of Collegium Noctuarum. Individuals are encouraged to present works for solo instrument, which has yielded performances of Corelli Op. 5 and Vivaldi cello sonatas.
As a principle goal of Collegium Noctuarum is to perform Baroque music from an "historical" vantage point, the ensemble is especially grateful for the opportunity to work with the distinguished musicology faculty of the Shepherd School. Faculty mentor Gregory Barnett is present at all stages of concert preparation. |
