Online Preliminary Submission by December 1, 2017

The green icon labeled “Preliminary Dropbox” at the bottom of this page will lead you to the Rice University portal for Acceptd, an online repository for preliminary audition materials. There is a $24 fee to use this service.

Preliminary submission is by audio or video (video preferred)

  • Two contrasting movements from the Bach Partita in A Minor or from a Bach sonata (accompaniment required)
  • Two movements from a Mozart concerto (accompaniment required)
  • Two contrasting selections of applicant's choice (accompaniment required, where applicable
  • Several orchestral excerpts

Required graduate live audition repertoire

  • Bach: a sonata chosen from among the following: B Minor, A Major, E Minor, E Major, or the Partita in A Minor, BWV 103
  • Mozart: Concerto in G Major, KV 313 or Concerto in D Major, KV 314
  • A major twentieth-century sonata for flute and piano such as Prokofiev or Liebermann
  • An unaccompanied work exhibiting command of extended techniques by one of the following: Robert Aitken, Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Ian Clarke, Robert Dick, Jennifer Higdon, Shirish Korde, Wil Offemans, Shulamit Ran or Toru Takemitsu
  • A contrasting selection of the applicant's choice

At least one of the above works should be memorized.

The complete program must be performed with piano with the exception of the unaccompanied works in your program. The Shepherd School will provide a pianist and limited rehearsal time if requested. If the Shepherd School is to provide the pianist, all piano parts must be made available three weeks before the scheduled audition date. The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety. However, the jury may decide to hear only certain portions.

Live auditions will be held on January 26, 2018.

If the preliminary audition is successful, the applicant will be invited for a live audition before members of the major department.
