Online Preliminary Submission by December 1, 2017

Preliminary submission is by video and should include the live audition repertoire. When recording the preliminary submission, please record with your full body and instrument in the frame.

The green icon labeled "Preliminary Dropbox" at the bottom of this page will lead you to the Rice University portal for Acceptd, an online repository for preliminary audition materials. There is a $24 fee to use this service.

All of the following repertoire is required for both the preliminary recording and the live audition.

  • Two contrasting movements of solo Bach (from any of the solo suites for cello)
  • Two movements of a major concerto
  • Representative excerpts from: a Mozart Symphony (Nos. 39, 35, 40, 41); Brahms Symphony No. 1 or 2; Beethoven Symphony No. 5, 3rd movement; Strauss Don Juan or Ein Heldenleben

Required graduate repertoire for the live audition

  • Two contrasting movements of a standard double bass concerto or comparable works from the standard double bass solo repertoire
  • Three orchestral excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire
  • Two movements of a solo Bach Suite in any key

Students are expected to know major and minor scales and arpeggios in three octaves.

Live auditions will be held January 19, 22 and 26, 2018.
