HOW TO APPLY: MASTER OF MUSIC

Applying for graduate music study at Rice is a straightforward process: the submission of a complete application for admission; performing an audition; and taking diagnostic exams in music theory and history. Subtle – but significant – differences in the application requirements do exist, however, based on your specific area of study or if you are an international applicant, for example. Please read this information carefully and thoroughly to be sure that you satisfy all of the application requirements. Of course, please contact us if you have any questions.

Master of Music applicants must complete the following:

  • Online application for admission
  • $40 application fee
  • Three letters of recommendation (click on link to download recommendation form)
  • Official transcripts from each college attended
  • Résumé
  • Copies of two to four programs for performances in which you participated during undergraduate school and/or the last two years. Please do not send originals.
  • Complete and submit the Shepherd School Graduate Audition Form, then schedule and perform an audition at The Shepherd School of Music
  • Schedule and take diagnostic exams in music theory and history

  • International applicants whose native language is not English AND who have not received a degree from an institution where the official language of instruction is English are required to submit a TOEFL score*.

The deadline for the Music Admissions Office to receive your complete application is January 2, 2008.

*    Rice University requires a score of at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, at least 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or 100 on the internet based test. For students who choose to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) in lieu of the TOEFL, the minimum score is 7.0.  For Fall admission, please arrange to have your scores sent to The Shepherd School of Music by January 2, 2008.
