HOW TO APPLY: DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS
Applying for doctoral music study at Rice is a two-phase process. The first phase is the submission of both a complete application for admission and a preliminary recording or composition portfolio.
Upon review of the preliminary recording/portfolios, select candidates will be invited for the second phase: a live audition (performance) or interview (composition) and taking diagnostic exams in music theory and history. Candidates should expect to be on campus two full days to complete the audition or interview and exams.
Doctor of Musical Arts applicants must submit the following:
- Instrumentalists: Your repertoire list should include all solo, chamber, and concerto works that you have performed prior to application for the D.M.A.
- Vocalists: Your repertoire list should include all art song literature, chamber music, orchestral works, oratorio and operatic roles, and arias that you have performed prior to application for the D.M.A.
- Performance applicants must submit a preliminary audition recording, preferably on DVD. Please see the doctoral auditions page for repertoire requirements.

- International applicants whose native language is not English AND who have not received a degree from an institution where the official language of instruction is English are required to submit a TOEFL score*.

The deadline for the Music Admissions Office to receive your complete application is January 2, 2008.

* Rice University requires a score of at least 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, at least 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or 100 on the internet based test. For students who choose to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) in lieu of the TOEFL, the minimum score is 7.0.
