DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS AUDITION DATES AND REQUIREMENTS

Cello: January 28, February 4 and 11, 2008

Required audition repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in cello, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience.

PRELIMINARY AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary audition is by tape.  Please indicate a movement from a concerto and two contrasting movements of Bach.

LIVE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
The repertoire for the audition must include one work from each of the following groups.

A. Bach – Any of the six Solo Sonatas (complete) from memory.

B. A concerto (from memory) by: Barber, Saint-Saens No. 1, Bloch Schelomo, Schumann, Dvorak, Shostakovich No. 1 or 2, Haydn D Major or C Major, Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations, Hindemith, Walton, Prokofieff Op. 125

C. A sonata by Beethoven or Brahms.

D. A work for cello, unaccompanied or with piano, composed after 1950, from memory.  (If longer than 10 minutes, a representative 10-minute portion is sufficient.)

E.  One of the following from Group A or B, of not less than 5 minutes in duration, from memory.

  • A sonata by Locatelli, Fancoeur, Boccherini A Major or Vanentini-Piatti.
  • A virtuoso work by Sevais or David Popper, or 2 Piatti Caprices.

With the exception of category A, the complete program must be performed with piano.  The Shepherd School will provide a pianist and limited rehearsal time if requested.  If the Shepherd School is to provide the pianist, all piano parts must be made available three weeks before the schedules audition date.  The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety.  However, the jury may decide to hear only certain portions.

Clarinet: February 15 and 18, 2008

Required audition repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in clarinet, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience.  The repertoire for the audition should include works for the following groups:

  • Concertos
    A.  Eighteen century: Mozart, Stamitz, Krommer, Molter
    B.  Nineteenth century: Spohr and Weber
    C.  Twentieth century: Nielsen, Francais, Hindemith, Copland, To
  • Sonatas
    A.  Eighteenth century: Wanhal, Danzi, Devienne
    B.  Nineteenth century: Brahms
    C.  Twentieth century: Bernstein, Hindemith, Poulenc, Martinu, Stanford
  • Other Solos
    A.  With piano: Debussy, Lutoslawski, Berg, Benjamin
    B.  Unaccompanied: Stravinsky, Martino, Smith, Rosza
  • Selected Orchestral Excerpts from:
    • Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 4, 6, 8              
    • Brahms Symphonies Nos. 1, 3, 4

Composition
DMA Composition applicants must submit a portfolio of compositions that are representative of their work to date.  No live performance audition is necessary.  Select applicants will be invited for an interview with the Composition faculty.  The interview is mandatory, and an important condition of the application process.  After DMA materials have been submitted, faculty will review portfolios and extend interview invitations to DMA application finalists.  Interviews will be conducted on the Rice University campus, and will be concluded by the middle of March.

All applicants for graduate study in Composition must submit a recording that demonstrates competence on an instrument or voice, using the appropriate literature.  The purpose of this is to establish the applicant’s musical ability and background; it is not required that the skills be at the level of a major in performance.  Repertoire for the recording may be of the applicant’s own choosing. No live performance audition is necessary.

Double Bass

The Shepherd School Office of Music Admissions will contact double bass applicants invited for a live audition upon review of the preliminary recordings. Live auditions will be scheduled individually on a date and time in January or February that is mutually convenient to the applicant and faculty.

Required audition repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in Double Bass, each applicant must play an audition showing a high a consistent of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience.

PRELIMINARY AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary audition is by DVD.  Please include a movement from a concerto and two contrasting movements of Bach.

LIVE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
The repertoire for the audition must include one work from each of the following groups.

A. Bach: any of the six solo suites (complete).

B. A concerto (from memory) by: Dittersdorf, Bottesini, Koussevitzky, Vanhal, Other works may be accepted by approval

C. A sonata by Misek or other by approval.

D. A work for unaccompanied bass or with piano composed after 1950.  (If longer than 10 minutes a representative 10-minute portion is sufficient.)

E. One of the following from Group A or B, of not less than 5 minutes in duration (from memory):

1. A sonata by a Baroque composer, i.e., Vivaldi or from the O Zimmerman collection (7 Baroque Sonatas). 2. A virtuoso work by Bottesini, Rabbath, or other by approval.

Request for an appropriate substitution from Groups III and V will be given consideration.

With the exception of category A, the complete program must be performed with piano.  The Shepherd School will provide a pianist and limited rehearsal time if requested.  If the Shepherd School is to provide the pianist, all piano parts must be made available three weeks before the scheduled audition date.  In the case of foreign students not living in the U.S., the applicant may ask for approval to submit video recording of the complete audition repertoire.  

The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety.  However, the jury may decide to hear only certain partitions. 

Flute: February 15 and 18, 2008

Required Audition Repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in flute, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicting considerable performance experience.

PRELIMINARY AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary audition is by tape.  Any recent recording of a recital is acceptable, provided that it offers varied repertoire from several contrasting musical periods.  Please indicate several orchestral excerpts as well.

LIVE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
If the preliminary audition is successful, the applicant will be invited for a live audition before members of the major department.  This audition will consist of the following repertoire:

A. Bach: a sonata chosen form among the following: B minor (BWV 1030), A major (BWV 1032), E minor (BWV 1034), E major (BWV 1035), or the Partita in A minor BWV 1013.
           
B. Mozart, Concerto in G major, KV 313, or Concerto in D major KV 314.

C. A twentieth-century sonata for flute and piano by one of the following: Martin Amlin, Philippe Gaubert, Lowell Liebermann, Bohuslav Martinu, Robert Muczynski, Walter Piston, Sergei Prokofiev

D. An unaccompanied work exhibiting command of extended techniques by one of the following: Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Michael Colquhoun, Robert Dick, Denis Gougeon, Kazuo Fukushima, Lee Gannon, John Heiss, Jennifer Higdon, Shirish Korde, Wil Offermans, Shulamit Ran, Harvey Sollberger

E. A contrasting selection of the applicant’s choice.
AT LEAST ONE OF THE ABOVE WORKS SHOULD BE FROM MEMORY

F. Five contrasting orchestral excerpts.

With the exception of D and F, the complete program must be performed with piano.  The Shepherd School will provide a pianist and limited rehearsal time if requested.  If the Shepherd School is to provide the pianist, all piano parts must be made available three weeks before the scheduled audition date. The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety.  However, the jury may decide to hear only certain portions.

Oboe: January 21, 25 and February 25, 2008

The Shepherd School Office of Music Admissions will contact oboe applicants invited for a live audition upon review of the preliminary recordings. Live auditions will be scheduled individually on a date and time in that is mutually convenient to the applicant and faculty.

Required Audition Repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in oboe, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience.  For repertoire for the audition, please contact the Shepherd School Admissions Office.

The complete program must be performed with piano.  The Shepherd School will provide a pianist and limited rehearsal time if requested.  If the Shepherd School is to provide the pianist, all piano parts must be made available three weeks before the scheduled audition date. The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety.  However, the jury may decide to hear only certain portions.

Percussion

The Shepherd School Office of Music Admissions will contact percussion applicants invited for a live audition upon review of the preliminary recordings. Live auditions will be scheduled individually on a date and time in that is mutually convenient to the applicant and faculty.

Required Audition Repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in percussion, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience.  The repertoire for the audition must include one work from each of the following groups. *

I. J.S. Bach: Two movements (contrasting) from any of the six violin sonatas and partitas, or from the unaccompanied cello suites.

II. A major solo work on marimba (i.e. Kurka, Creston, Milhaud, or major work by a Japanese composer)

III. A short work for vibraphone.

IV. A movement of a solo for timpani. (i.e. Carter 8 pieces for Timpani)

V. A sample of playing ability on concert snare drum. (i.e. 2 Delecluse Etudes in contrasting styles)

VI. A solo for multiple percussion instruments. (A videotaped performance is acceptable.)

VII. Candidate must demonstrate knowledge of orchestral literature for percussion – to consist of: 6 timpani excerpts (standard), 6 snare drum excerpts, 6 xylophone excerpts, 6 glockenspiel excerpts, 6 excerpts for accessories

*Substitutions on all solo works acceptable with permission of major teacher.

The marimba solo (if it has accompaniment) must be performed with piano.  The Shepherd School will provide a pianist.  The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety.  However, the jury may decide to hear only certain portions.

At the time of the audition, the candidate will interview with the percussion faculty and the music director of the orchestra to discuss the applicant’s background in solo, chamber, and concerto repertoire.  The solo, chamber and concerto repertoire a student will be will be required to study for graduation will depend upon an evaluation of this background. 

Piano: February 29 and March 1, 2008

Required Audition Repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in piano, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience.  Preliminary audition is by tape.  Any recent recording of a recital is acceptable, provided that it offers varied repertoire from several contrasting musical periods.  Repertoire for the live audition should be representative of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century music.  A complete sonata must also be included.

Viola: January 18, February 1, 11, 22, 2008

Required Audition Repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in viola, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience. 

PRELIMINARY AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary audition is by tape.  Please indicate a movement from a concerto and two contrasting movement of Bach. 

LIVE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
The applicant should present for audition a program of 60-70 minutes duration, including one work from each of the four categories below.  One piece must be written after 1970.

            A. Bach (from memory)
                        1. Any of the six cello suites
                        2. Any of the violin solo sonatas or partitas

            B. A complete concerto (from memory) by:
                        1. Bartok
                        2. Hindemith – Der Schwanendrehrer
                        3. Walton
                        4. Piston
                        5. Schnittke
                        6. Harbison
                        7. Penderecki

C. A substantial work such as Brahms, Clarke, Hindemith, Rochberg, Shostakovich, Schumann, Vieuxtemps, or Bax.

D. An unaccompanied work such as Hindemith Op. 25 #1, Op. 11 #5, Reger, or a showpiece such as the ones included in Primrose’s collection.

For works that require piano accompaniment, the Shepherd School will provide a pianist and limited rehearsal time if requested.  If the Shepherd School is to provide the pianist, all piano parts must be made available three weeks before the scheduled audition date. 

The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety.  However, the jury may decide to hear only certain portions.

Violin

Audition dates for Mr. Goldsmith: 
Upon review of the preliminary recordings, the Shepherd School Office of Music Admissions will contact applicants whom Mr. Goldsmith would like to invite for a live audition. Live auditions will be scheduled individually on a date and time in that is mutually convenient to the applicant and faculty.
Audition dates for Mr. Lin: February 1, 4, and 22, 2008
Audition dates for Mr. Luca: February 11 and 22, 2008
Audition dates for Ms. Winkler: February 25, 2008

Required Audition Repertoire
For admission to the DMA program in violin, each applicant must play an audition showing a high and consistent level of artistry as well as a background indicating considerable performance experience.

PRELIMINARY AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary audition is by tape.  Please include a movement from a concerto and two contrasting movements of Bach.

LIVE REQUIRED REQIREMENTS
The repertoire for the audition must include one work from each of the following groups.

A. Bach: Any of the six solo sonatas and partitas (complete) from memory

B. A concerto (from memory) by: Bartok, Paganini, Beethoven, Prokofieff, Brahms, Shostakovich, No 2, Dvorak, Sibelius, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky

C. A concerto by Mozart (from memory): K207, 211, 216, 218, 219 or Haydn Concerto in C Major or G major (from memory).

D. A work for violin unaccompanied or with piano composed after 1950.  (If longer than 10 minutes, a representative 10-minute portion is sufficient.)  Memorization is not required for this work.

E. A virtuoso work no less than 5 minutes in duration by one of the following (from memory): Bazzini, Sarasate, Ernst, Vieuxtemps, Paganini, Wieniawski

With the exception of category A, the complete program must be performed with piano.  The Shepherd School will provide a pianist and limited rehearsal time if requested.  If the Shepherd School is to provide the pianist, all piano parts must be made available three weeks before the scheduled audition time.  The applicant must be prepared to perform all chosen works in their entirety.  However, the jury may decide to hear only certain portions.

Voice: February 1 and 2, 2008

Required Audition Repertoire
Admission shall be determined by personal audition and interview and is open to those most gifted and accomplished musicians who also possess a broad knowledge of music, a keen intellect, a natural curiosity for a wide variety of disciplines, and the potential for pursuing high level performance, scholarly interest, and teaching careers.

PRELIMINARY TAPE REQUIREMENTS
The applicant will submit a preliminary audition tape, which will include at least one song each in English, French, Italian, and German plus three arias of your choice.  One of those selections should represent the Baroque period.

LIVE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
The applicant will prepare a recital of 30 minutes duration to include four languages and a variety of musical styles, which must include Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century.  The recital must be performed from memory.
