Four Rice University music professors received the 2003-2004 ASCAP
(American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Award for
their original compositions and recent performances.
Anthony Brandt, Shih-Hui
Chen, Arthur Gottschalk
and Kurt Stallmann were
recognized by an independent panel for their work.
ASCAP
is the primary performing rights organization in the United States
for more than 140,000 composers, songwriters and publishers of all
kinds of music. ASCAP protects the rights of its members by licensing
and distributing royalties for the non-dramatic public performances
of their copyrighted works.
Brandt, an assistant professor
of composition and theory, had two pieces that premiered in 2002.
He is a founding member of Musiqa, a contemporary music ensemble
that includes four other Rice professors and a University of Houston
professor.
Chen, an assistant professor
of composition and theory, had two pieces that premiered in 2002.
She has been awarded ASCAP awards annually since 1994 and is also
a member of Musiqa.
Gottschalk, a professor
and chair of the Department of Composition and Theory, had eight
pieces that premiered in 2002 and over 45 reported performances
of his music. He has received the ASCAP award annually since 1980
for his compositions.
Stallmann, an assistant
professor of music and director of the Rice
Electronic Music Labs premiered two pieces in 2002. He is also
a member of Musiqa.
The panelists are Peter Filchia, drama critic for the Star-Ledger;
Peter Keepnews, a journalist specializing in jazz and popular culture;
Melinda Newman, West Coast Bureau Chief of Billboard; Pat Prescott,
veteran radio personality who currently hosts the morning show on
KTWV in Los Angeles; Greg Sandow, music educator, composer and classical
music critic for The Wall Street Journal; and Fred Sherry, world-renowned
cellist and member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
