CLARA SHIN SILVER MEDALIST IN WORLD PIANO COMPETITION

On Sunday July 11, 2004, Neal Gittleman of the Dayton Philharmonic conducted three medal finalists and the World Festival Orchestra for the World Piano Competition. Shepherd School pianist Clara Jung Yang Shin was awarded the silver medal and will be making a concert appearance in Cincinnati in the 2004-2005 concert season.

Clara ShinPianist Clara Yung-Yang Shin is winning acclaim for the exquisite sensitivity and vibrant energy of her playing. She was the top winner of the 2002 Entergy Texas Young Artist Competition, where she captured the Audience Choice Award for her dazzling performance of Franz Liszt’s “Totentanz.” Ms. Shin won the 2002 Ruth Burr Award presented by the Houston Tuesday Musical Club and the 2001 Hemphill-Wells Sorantin Young Artist Competition. She has also been a prizewinner in the Dvorak International Piano Competition in the Czech Republic, and the Joseph Hoffman International Piano Competition in South Carolina.

As an accomplished chamber musician, Ms. Shin has collaborated with national and international artists. She won the Byrd Competition for Duo Piano and was a member of Ambrosio Trio, the first piano trio in-residence at the University of Florida. Most recently, she performed her chamber arrangement of Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 21 at the Banff International Keyboard Festival.

Ms. Shin was the first student to receive the Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Korean National University of Arts in 1997 studying with Kyung-Sook Lee, Chong-Pil Lim, Dae-Jin Kim, Choong-Mo Kang. She completed her Master of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Florida in 1999, under the guidance of Professor Boaz Sharon. Currently, she is completing the doctoral program at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, where she studies with Robert Roux on the scholarship given by the Melbern G. and Susanne M. Glasscock Foundation.
