THE SHEPHERD SCHOOL OF MUSIC 30TH ANNIVERSARY GALA
"THE YEAR OF THE ORCHESTRA"

The 2005-2006 academic year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the inauguration of The Shepherd School of Music of Rice University. In just thirty years the Shepherd School has ascended to the top echelon of music conservatories in the United States and become one of the nation's most prestigious major university-level music programs. In honor of this signal achievement we have decided to proclaim this year "The Year of the Orchestra", celebrating the success of our renowned symphony orchestra program.

The year will be highlighted by a gala concert and dinner on Saturday, February 4, 2006 featuring legendary violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman performing with the Shepherd School orchestras in Stude Concert Hall. Maestro Perlman will be the soloist in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major with the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra and conduct the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra in Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F Minor. The concert will be followed by dinner and dancing in a tented ballroom on the East Lawn of Alice Pratt Brown Hall. Longtime friends of the Shepherd School, Anne Duncan and Bucky Allshouse, have graciously agreed to serve as co-chairs for the evening.

All net proceeds from the event will be used to significantly grow the School's endowed scholarship funds. Increasing scholarship support for the talented young musicians studying at the Shepherd School is our highest fundraising priority. Competitive scholarship packages for prospective students enable us to successfully recruit the most talented young artist/scholars in the world.

Rice University has created a new naming opportunity in acknowledgement of the Shepherd School’s anniversary and the success of its orchestral program. A select few of the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra's Principal Chairs will be offered for naming. The Shepherd School's finest students are appointed to a Principal Orchestral Chair for each of its six symphony orchestra concerts. To perform as a principal player is considered a distinct honor. Principal Chair endowments will provide substantive scholarship support for these specially selected students.

We hope you will be able to join us for this memorable evening. Tickets to the Gala will start at $500 and invitations will be mailed to everyone on the calendar mailing list in mid-November. In the meantime, if you are interested in reserving a table for the Gala, or have questions about the endowed scholarship naming opportunities, please contact Stephanie Jones, Director of Development for the Shepherd School, at 713-348-4992.
