12-16 Shepherd School Students to Perform at Kennedy Center
The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University has been chosen as one of eight leading music conservatories by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to participate in its new program, the Conservatory Project.
12-8 Michael Esch Represented by Marilyn Gilbert Artist Management
Michael Esch is in the process of completing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree on full scholarship at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston Texas. His major teacher at Rice has been Robert Roux ; Michael has also coached extensively at Rice with Jon Kimura Parker .
12-2 Continuous Twenty-four hour Performance of Satie's Vexations
Eric Satie's Vexations will be performed by several Houston pianists including Shepherd School faculty members Pierre Jalbert, Jeanne Kierman-Fischer and Kurt Stallmann.

Chamber Music Recital to Feature New Shepherd School Professors
A chamber music recital Nov. 21 will feature performances by Shepherd School faculty members Robert Atherholt, Benjamin Kamins and William Ver Meulen, all of whom began teaching full time at the music school this fall.

11-14 Shepherd School Alumna Returns for Organ Series
Shepherd School of Music alumna Susan Soderstrom Matteson will return to Rice Friday, Nov. 14, to perform as part of the Marguerite and Jock Davidson Organ Series. Matteson is the first among the distinguished music school alumni to be featured as part of this organ series, which was inaugurated in February 2001.
11-14 Shepherd School to Receive Defibrillator
The Shepherd School of Music will soon become the third location on the Rice campus to have installed a potentially life-saving tool: an automated external defibrillator (AED).

10-20 Al-Zand Compositon for Trumpet Wins Second Sackler Prize
Composer and pianist Karim Al-Zand has been named the recipient of the second annual Raymond and Beverly Sackler Music Competition Prize. Sponsored by the School of Fine Arts at the University of Connecticut, the competition supports and promotes aspiring composers and the performance of their new musical works.

10-9 Shepherd School's Lavenda to premiere two newly written pieces
When Richard Lavenda composed his two most recent pieces, he had the added benefit of working with three highly acclaimed performers who gave him feedback. Their insight proved to be invaluable, said Lavenda, professor of composition and theory at the Shepherd School of Music.
10-6 Ellsworth Milburn Guest Composer for December Syzygy Concert
Critics have described his music as craggy, colorful, romantic, aggressive, searing, sweetly poignant, overwhelming, thrilling, powerful, wickedly funny, eloquent, brilliant, raging and engaging. Milburn, who served as professor of composition and theory, retired in the fall of 1999 after being a faculty member of the Shepherd School since it officially opened in 1975. He was chair of the department of composition and theory for more than half of his time at Rice.
10-4 Community MusicWorks Cellist Sara Stalnaker Binds a Community Together with Music
Sara Stalnaker cellist, joined Community MusicWorks in September 2001. After completing a Masters degree in Violoncello Performance at Rice University in Houston, Texas, Sara was elated to find an opportunity to play chamber music and teach cello in Providence, a city where she has family ties.
10-3 Families Weekend 2003
Families can attend classes with their student, hear lectures by distinguished members of Rice's faculty, enjoy coffee with Vice President for Student Affairs Zenaido Camacho and participate in roundtable discussions with college masters, resident associates and Rice students. Other weekend activities on the schedule are sporting events, one-act plays by the colleges, a performance by the Rice Players and a concert by the Shepherd School Symphony.
9-11 Rice Chorale Performs Requiem by Brahms in Memory of the Tragedy of 9-11
Joining the nation and world, Rice Chorale under the direction of Thomas Jaber, Director of Choral Activities at the Shepherd School of Music performed the Requiem by Johannes Brahms on September 11, 2003 in remembrance of the tragedy of 9-11. The performance was held in the Grand Foyer of Alice Pratt Brown Hall in spendid acoustics.
8-29 Four Theory Professors Receive the 2003-2004 ASCAP Award
Anthony Brandt, Shih-Hui Chen, Arthur Gottschalk and Kurt Stallmann were recognized by an independent panel for their work. ASCAP is the primary performing rights organization in the United States for more than 140,000 composers, songwriters and publishers of all kinds of music. ASCAP protects the rights of its members by licensing and distributing royalties for the non-dramatic public performances of their copyrighted works.

8-25 Raphael Fliegel Celebrates 85 Years
Raphael Fliegel, former concertmaster and principal second violinist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and Professor Emeritus of Violin at the Shepherd School of Music celebrated his 85th birthday with fellow colleagues at this fall's graduate student orientation.
5-14 Yekovich Appointed Dean of the Shepherd School
"We are extremely fortunate to have lured Bob Yekovich to Rice as dean of the Shepherd School," said Eugene Levy, provost of Rice. "Bob comes to Rice with an exceptional record of accomplishment in music and music-education leadership. I am confident that he will be able to bring the mix of inspiration and thoughtful guidance so essential to advancing the Shepherd School beyond its already manifestly high quality and distinction."
