Preparatory Program Chamber Music

Participation is open to students studying privately in the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program as well as other pre-college students in the Houston and surrounding community. Students participating in these groups must have attained a certain level of proficiency and participation depends upon the availability of other students of compatible age and ability, as well as proper grouping of instruments.  Students taking private lessons in the Preparatory Program receive priority in chamber music group placement as well as free tuition for participation in the chamber music program.

Students not taking private lessons in the Preparatory Program may participate in the chamber music for $200 fee per semester.  Placement in a chamber music group is done through an audition at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

Chamber Music is coordinated through the efforts of Ms. Rose Van der Werff.  Chamber music coaches are Brown Scholarship recipients who are graduate students at The Shepherd School of Music.

Chamber music rehearsals are every Saturday mornings at The Shepherd School of Music for 13 weeks during the fall and spring semesters.  Chamber music groups have the opportunity to perform at the end of each semester at a concert at The Shepherd School of Music.  Make-up rehearsals are extremely challenging to schedule.  Therefore, please do not sign up for chamber music unless the student is ready to make the 13-week Saturday morning commitment.

Participation in chamber music is also not guaranteed since it is necessary to match students who play at about the same level, are close to the same age, as well as the necessary combination of instruments.
