FACULTY
ROBERT ROUX began his career at age 10 with a performance on the nationally televised Lawrence Welk Show.
Since that time, he has been a winner of several piano competitions in the United States, including the United States Information Agency's Artistic Ambassador Competition and the International Piano Recording Competition. A Steinway Artist, Roux has toured as recitalist and concerto soloist in sixteen countries. His performances include appearances at the White House, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., New York’s Merkin Concert Hall, Stude Concert Hall in Houston, St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music, and Villa Pignatelli in Naples. Dr. Roux has served on the faculty of the prestigious Van Cliburn Institute, the Moscow International Piano Masterclasses, the Paris International Piano Sessions, and the Association of German Music Schools. He is listed in Who's Who in America and is also interviewed as one of the top teachers in Benjamin Saver's publication, The Most Wanted Piano Teachers in the USA.
SOHYOUNG PARK born in Seoul, Korea, received her doctoral degree from Rice University, master’s degree from the University of Michigan and bachelor’s degree in Seoul National University. Dr. Park also received a Diploma of Merit from Accademia musicale di Chigiana in Siena, Italy and attended the International Chamber Music School of Trio di Trieste in Italy. Her performances include appearances at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Auditorium del Museo revoltella in Trieste, Amalfi Music Festival in Vietri sul mare, Mozart Museum in Prague, the Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, the Series of the Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas in Lancing, and Gilmore Young Artists Showcase in Kalamazoo, Stude Concert Hall in Houston, and with Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria. She joined the faculty at Rice University in 2005. Previously, she has been a faculty member at Sam Houston State University. She is a highly sought-out teacher for pre-college students at the Rice University Preparatory Program.
DEAN SHANK has been an Artist Teacher of Piano at the Shepherd School for over twenty years. His recital appearances include an acclaimed New York debut at International House as well as performances in Italy, Hawaii, and the southern and midwestern United States. In the Shepherd School he is a prominent studio piano instructor in the preparatory division. As a nationally respected teacher, Dean Shank has lectured at the International Piano Pedagogy Workshops with John Perry in Italy, and Nelita True in Hawaii and at the National Piano Pedagogy Convention in Wisconsin. As a result of his extensive research into the history of the pianoforte, he has developed piano history and development at the Shepherd School. He holds bachelor and master of music degrees in piano performance from the University of North Texas and a doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance from the University of Texas-Austin. His teachers include Stefan Bardas, Richard Cass, Richard Goode, John Perry, the late William Race, and the late Alexander Uninsky
DARIUSZ PAWLAS, a native of Poland, received his diploma (cum laude) in piano performance from the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, studying with the eminent Polish teacher Professor Andrzej Jasinski. He earned both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees at Rice University studying with John Perry, artist teacher, for whom Dr. Pawlas was studio assistant. He has received numerous prizes and awards both in Europe and the United States. Dr. Pawlas has performed in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Greece, Holland, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Texas, Utah, Louisiana, and Washington, D.C., Zelazowa Wola. He has appeared as a soloist with major symphony orchestras in Europe. His recordings are available on Polskie Nagrania Records. He recently participated in the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, and has been on the faculty at the University of Texas in Austin. Active as a private piano instructor for pre-college students in the preparatory division of the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, many of his students are winners of local, state, national, and international music competitions.
ROBERT MOELING , a native of The Netherlands, pianist Robert Moeling has gained international acclaim as a soloist, chamber musician and pedagogue. Coming to the US as a Fulbright scholar, he has held teaching posts at Bethany College, Concordia University, The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and The Wisconsin Conservatory. He currently is staff pianist and preparatory piano instructor at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and visiting professor of piano and chamber music at Codarts, the University for the Performing Arts in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Mr. Moeling is pianist for the Webster Trio, with clarinetist Michael Webster, and flutist Leone Buyse. Mr. Moeling is a frequent guest with such organizations as, the Amsterdam Chamber Society, the Park City International Music Festival, the Sitka Festival, Festival of Estes Park, Anchorage Winter Classics, Groningen Festival, the Piatigorsky Foundation and many series throughout the US and Europe. Mr. Moeling's latest recordings include sonatas of Liszt and Brahms, and a Webster Trio recording with works by Brahms, Dvorak, Debussy and
Gottschalk.
THOMAS CONROY , completed his doctoral work in music composition at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. His orchestral dissertation was premiered by The Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra. For this work, Dr. Conroy received the Paul Cooper Memorial Award in Composition. While at Rice, he taught harmony, piano, and composition. He completed his Masters Degree in composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he won prizes in orchestral and choral composition. The conservatory orchestra premiered his Essay For Orchestra. Other academic achievements include a diploma with highest honors and distinction from the European American Musical Alliance composition program at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. Dr. Conroy is a versatile musician who has toured as an actor with several Broadway shows including Crazy for You, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and Grease, as well as Bernadette Peters‚ concerts in San Francisco. Currently, he is the manager of MUSIQA - a dynamic group of local composers who create and promote new music. and is writing the lyrics and composing music for a new musical drama: Searching for Spinoza.
TROY WAYNE- graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters, and a Graduate Diploma in composition. After a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. Wayne continued graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music where he taught advanced theory classes and composition with the Preparatory Program and later music fundamentals for college non-majors. His music has been performed by the New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and Contemporary Ensemble, the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble, and the Woodlands Symphony. He has written for actress Rachel Buchman; Heather Kellgreen, principle harp of the Tulsa Symphony; and Samuel Getchell, principle trombone of the Pittsburgh Opera. Mr. Wayne has served as Adjunct Professor of Music and a guest lecturer at the New England Conservatory as well as guest speaker at the Moores School of Music. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor of Music at Houston Community College and writing a textbook on the fundamentals of music for college non-music majors.

ADMISSIONS
- Rice Summer Institute for Piano is designed for students interested in classical piano study, who might be considering a possible major in music.
- Students must be playing either the first mvt. of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert, or the first mvt. of a concerto. The enrollment process is competitive and will be limited to 24 students.
- First time applicants must submit a recorded audition along with completed application form. Audition recordings should consist of one of the selections mentioned above, and a contrasting selection. Repertoire used for audition will be the repertoire that is polished and performed during camp.
- Returning campers need not send the audition recordings, but must submit the application form.
- Piano teachers wishing to attend as observers will pay a reduced rate (see below). Observing teachers may attend all group functions, but will not receive private instruction or perform on recital.

DEADLINE
Deadline for audition recordings is April 1st. Tuition will be due by May 1st, after acceptance to camp.

TUITION: $850
This includes room and board, tickets and transportation to performances, all teaching and class materials.
- Housing and meals will be on the Rice University Campus. Classes will be held in Alice Pratt Brown Hall, Shepherd school of Music at Rice University.
- Students from the Houston area who elect to reside with their families may pay a reduced tuition rate of $760. This includes the noon & evening meals.
- Parents may stay in the dorms with younger children and will be charged $480 for entertainment, room, and board.
- Tuition for observing teachers, residing in the dorm, is $460 and for those commuting, $380.
ARRIVAL
Participants should arrive on campus between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, June 8th. Campus maps and detailed instructions will be provided to all participants upon completed application.
DEPARTURE
There will be a culminating student recital and farewell in Duncan Recital Hall from 2:00-4:00 on Sunday, Jun. 15th. Parents and family members are invited to attend. Students will check out of the dorm after the recital.
