YING ZHANG began her piano studies at the age of seven at Children’s Conservatory in Xi’an, China. After immigrated to the U.S. in 1992, she continued her professional training at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Since then she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory, her Master’s degree in Music from Indiana University, and currently she is finishing her Doctorate degree in Musical Arts, under the artistic guidance of Professor Robert Roux at Rice University in Houston.

Miss Ying’s rare talent has been recognized and rewarded with full scholarships and prizes throughout her musical career, including the prestigious summer music festivals such as Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Summer Piano Festival at SUNY New Paltz, and the Las Vegas International Summer Music Festival.

Her outstanding sensitivity and bursting passion, along with the well-rounded musicality makes her playing from J.S. Bach to Bartok full of life and emotional power. In the U.S., at one time or another, Miss Ying was the proud winner of the Southern California Bach Competition, the Redlands Bowl Competition, the Bartok/Kabulevsky International Piano Competition, and the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition. Miss Ying began her concert career at the age of twelve, after winning the National Young Pianist’s Competition in China. Being one of the three winners selected from the entire Nation, Miss Ying was offered a debut tour with the Chinese Youth Orchestra throughout the country, playing contemporary music composed for special occasions. August 17th, 2002 held an unforgettable evening in Miss Ying’s concert career. Hollywood’s brand new home of the Oscars, the Kodak Theatre lighted for the first pianist ever to perform there. Three thousand seats were filled with curiosity and expectations. After Miss Ying’s sensational performance of Saint-Saens G minor Piano Concerto with the New West Symphony Orchestra, audience members responded with enthusiastic standing ovation that lasted nearly fifteen minutes long, and many of them had tears of excitements in their eyes.

Miss Ying received numerous concert engagements immediately after the concert. However, in her own words, “playing concerts is a life-time career, right now, I want to better myself with knowledge and get my doctorate degree.” Miss Ying will complete her studies of coursework at Rice University in December, 2004. She is planning to fully involve in a concert career soon after that. Her first few destinations will include China, Korea, Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines.
