RACHELLE HUNT, VIOLIN
Senior Student

There were several factors that influenced my decision to attend the Shepherd School of Music.  My teacher, Kathleen Winkler, is regarded as one of the finest teachers of our time, and after meeting with her, I really wanted to work with her.  Additionally, the atmosphere seemed more welcoming than in many other schools.  Everyone is very friendly and supportive.  I was also drawn to Shepherd because of the small size, which enables the professors and teachers to actually get to know their students.  I liked the fact that there is a great deal of interaction between all students - undergraduates play with graduate and doctoral students in orchestra and chamber music.  And of course, there is the advantage of having Rice right here, so we can pursue any academic interests.

I believe the Shepherd School does a very good job in preparing students for the future.  The intense orchestra program here covers a variety of music - from premieres to Bernstein to Mozart. People here take orchestra seriously, and it shows.  And with our primary conductor, Larry Rachleff, as well as guest conductors such as Hans Graf and Itzhak Perlman, we learn vital orchestral skills that will be very valuable in the "real world."

I'm not quite sure what is my favorite part of Shepherd School.  I love the friendly and supportive atmosphere.  It is common for people to play for other members of their studios and bounce ideas off of one another.  I also like the fact that everyone, especially my teacher, has a genuine interest in me and pushes me to do my best - not just reach a standard, but go above that to reach my full potential.
