TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES AT THE SHEPHERD SCHOOL OF MUSIC Welcome to the Rice University Shepherd School of Music. Thank you for considering the Shepherd School in your search for the right undergraduate music program for you. The Shepherd School offers conservatory-like pre-professional musical training as well as the challenging, rewarding academic experience of one of America’s premier universities. It is a unique place where a student can take a lesson from a world-class musician in the afternoon and attend an evening lecture by a world leader without ever leaving the building. Undergraduate students comprise approximately 45% of the 300 students studying at the Shepherd School. From their first day on campus, our undergraduates serve as vital members of our instrumental and vocal programs, learning and performing alongside accomplished graduate students. Our small size allows us to focus on the cultivation of each student’s own talent and skills in an environment of undeniably high standards and refreshing support.The quality of facilities, abundance of performance opportunities and the uncompromising artistry are all significant features of the Shepherd School. Ultimately, however, it is our faculty that distinguishes us. It is an extraordinary collection of accomplished artists and scholars dedicated to realizing each student’s potential.
