Rice University is committed to providing financial assistance for our students and to making the process of getting that aid as painlessly as possible. Financial assistance may be in the form of need-based funds awarded through the Rice University Office of Financial Aid, a merit scholarship from The Shepherd School of Music, or a combination of the two.
Rice University meets 100% of a student’s demonstrated institutional need based on financial aid eligibility. Rice will not award loans to students whose family total income is below $80,000. The student's financial need will be met through a combination of grants, work study, merit aid (if qualified) and institutional funds. For families with incomes above $80,000, Rice will award a $2,500 subsidized loan, grants, work study, merit aid (if qualified) and institutional funds to cover 100% of the student's demonstrated institutional need.
*NOTE: All expenses are estimates and are subject to change, based on policy changes and cost of living increases and does not include one-time O-week ($635) and iPREP ($175) fees.
In addition to Rice University’s generous and responsive financial aid program, The Shepherd School of Music awards competitive merit-based scholarships to its students to recognize exceptional musical accomplishment and potential. Music students who wish to be considered for a merit award are required to apply for need-based assistance and complete the Shepherd School Financial Assistance Application.
