Admission information related to the novel coronavirus COVID-19

We understand the global implications of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 are changing on a daily basis, and the Offices of Admission and Financial Aid at Rice University continue to closely monitor this situation. We know many communities are impacted and many schools in affected areas have been suspended. Our highest priority and concern is for the health and safety of everyone affected.

Based on the evolving situation, the Rice University Crisis Management Team announced additional precautionary measures over the next several weeks in response to the novel coronavirus COVID-19. These include the cancellation of classes for the week of March 9-13 and the cancellation of large events through April 30.

During normal business hours, our offices and campus remain open to answer any admission or financial aid questions you may have.

During this uncertain and challenging time, and in accordance with our commitment to a holistic review process, our offices will work with students, teachers and counselors to ensure applicants will not be penalized for any situations beyond their control. For applicants currently dealing with difficulties presented by the coronavirus (including school closures, cancelled tests, distance learning, lack of access to school documents or personnel, suppressed results on AP/IB/national exams, or other circumstances), we encourage you to contact the Office of Admission at riceapps@rice.edu or 713-348-7423 or the Shepherd School of Music Office of Admission at musi@rice.edu or 713-348-4854 or the office of Financial Aid at fina@rice.edu or 713-348-4958. We will be as accommodating as possible within the constraints of the overall admission and financial aid processes.

Decision Release

We do not currently anticipate that the coronavirus situation will impact our admission process or timeline.

Daily Admission Events March 9 to April 30

Based on the current recommendations of the Rice University Crisis Management Team, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all information sessions, tours, lunch visits, overnight visits, and class visits through April 30. Any registrants who prepaid lunch during this time will be automatically fully refunded.

Owl Days and Admit Days

Traditionally in April we host a number of campus events for our admitted students, including Admit Days and Owl Days to help introduce students to the Rice culture and community. Based on the current recommendations of the Rice University Crisis Management Team, we will not be able to host Owl Days and Admit Days.  This was a very difficult decision to make, and we understand and share your disappointment.

In the coming weeks we will be connecting with admitted students, current students and campus partners to discuss the potential of virtual events for our admitted students to participate in.
