Old traditions get a fresh twist in this program. Mendelssohn honors his idol J.S. Bach in his sweeping "Reformation" Symphony, while Prokofiev pays a witty, 20th-century homage to Mozart and Haydn in his joyful "Classical" Symphony. In between, Concerto Competition winner Diego Jaquez takes center stage for Vaughan Williams’s Tuba Concerto—a historic work that first proved the tuba could, too, take the spotlight as soloist.
