The inclusion of select hymn tunes from the standard hymnody written by famous Classical composers is an integral part of our modern-day hymnal. The lack of awareness, among Christians, of the connections between the hymns and the original composers and authors is often overlooked. This research further explores the origins of these hymn tunes and the suitability of these arrangements in religious music context. Of particular interest are Antioch, Ein Feste Burg, Herzlich tut mich verlangen, Hymn to Joy, Judas Maccabeus, Lyons, O Welt ich muss dich lassen, and Wachet auf. This research details these works, any piano arrangements of these works, and comment upon their current or potential use in contemporary church service. Furthermore, the review identifies composers that these tunes are from, any recent research that may point to a different composer, who the author of the text is, and when it came to be in a hymnal setting. The generalized findings suggest that as early as the 12th century, church music borrowed from secular music and appropriated the tunes into a hymn. Additionally, when adopting these sacred tunes into an arrangement, the composers referred to the original tunes written by the famous Classical composers and provided a new outlook through different harmonies and rhythmic figurations. In conclusion, this research contributes towards providing an overview for the musicians of different religious denominations to have an array of suitable music, not limited to traditional church hymnals, to play during a worship service.
