Quatuor Modigliani’s program includes works that occupy a special position in each composer’s output, notably all relying heavily on expression and motivic unity. With one of his later quartets, we witness how Haydn nearly achieves Classical structural perfection, building large motivic structures from small musical ideas. Marking the emergence of musical Impressionism, this single string quartet by Debussy redefines harmonic language, colors, and textures, considered one of the most influential chamber works of the late 19th century. As a memorial to his son who fell in World War II, Vierne uses his piano quintet to convey deep mourning and powerful defiance. The dark C-minor tonality works well as a deeply personal monument of grief and remembrance.
