My thesis orchestral work was composed from materials I have been developing in various forms for the past seven years. The concepts of motivic permeation and continual variation were important to this work; every moment is derived from a previous moment in the piece, and an effort has been made to completely forego exact repetitions. The initial motivic ‘seed’ could be described in the following way: An initial presentation of the descending Major 7th is then both inverted and asymmetrically bisected into a perfect fourth & tritone pair. These two opening gestures provide the intervallic and harmonic basis for nearly all subsequent music. (Department : Shepherd School of Music)
