Early in the process, the task force decided that it was critically important to articulate a mission statement to give direction to the actions of MUSE. All of the recommendations for action were evaluated through this lens. In its meetings, the Mission and Values subcommittee composed the following MUSE Mission Statement which was analyzed and discussed in a full task force meeting:
The mission of MUSE is to heighten the awareness of underrepresented musical voices who have contributed to the tradition of Western art music and to equip the Shepherd community with the tools to address the issues specific to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Through our work, we hope to foster a healthy, safe, and proactive environment that is adaptable to the evolving field of music.
