A superficial understanding of a thing doesn’t prevent one’s own ability to experience that thing deeply. As people, we become fascinated and moved by places, people, stories, sounds, images, and ideas. Even if we are no expert on the material in front of us, we can create our own rich mental network of meanings and perceptions.
This piece is about encountering the dazzling beauty of Balinese gamelan and allowing my own superficial perception of it flourish. In particular, this piece is based on themes played by the gamelan ensemble of Bangle, Bali in their performance of “Tabuh Kreasi Baru” recorded in 2011 by the Ethnographic Museum of Geneva.
