Enjoy a deconstructed look at two full-length American comic operas: Karim Al-Zand’s 50th anniversary commission A Joint Interest and William Bolcom’s Lucrezia. Aleko Endowed Artist Paul Curran guides audiences through these mischievous and delightfully theatrical worlds. Shepherd School Chamber Players will accompany both contemporary operas from the pit, led by Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

The program begins with the world premiere of Karim Al-Zand’s A Joint Interest, inspired by an O. Henry short story titled Makes the Whole World Kin. This comic scene for three singers is a tale of late-night insomnia, cat burglary and the aches and pains that bind us all.

William Bolcom’s Lucrezia follows, a fast-paced, 60-minute comedic farce for five vocalists, where the alluring Lucrezia deftly outwits her suitors into giving her both pleasure and their coin.

Join us for this rare inside look at how new opera comes to life!
